Why can't I see someone's Instagram story?
Usually for one of six reasons: you muted their stories, they hid their story from you, it was a Close Friends story, the account is private and you aren't an approved follower, they blocked you, or the story expired or was deleted. If your friends can see it and you can't, the likeliest causes are the hide setting or Close Friends, and Instagram doesn't notify anyone about either. Less often it's an app glitch, or you don't follow the account, so its stories never reach your tray.
What you see and what it usually means
| What you see | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| Their photo sits at the end of your story tray, faded | You muted their stories |
| No ring on their photo, but their posts and follower count look normal | They hid their story from you, or nothing is up right now |
| Friends mention a story with a green ring that you never saw | It was a Close Friends story |
| "This account is private" and a Follow button, although you used to follow them | They removed you as a follower |
| The account doesn't come up in search, or opens empty | You're blocked, or the account was deactivated |
| The ring was there earlier and now it's gone | The story expired or was deleted |
| The ring is grey instead of colored | You've already watched it |
You muted their stories
Muting is the cause you control, and it's easy to switch on by accident. Muted accounts move to the end of the tray with a faded photo and are skipped when you tap through other stories. You can still open them from the profile.
To unmute, open their profile, tap Following, then Mute, and switch off the toggle for stories. Menu names shift a little between app versions. The other person is never told either way. The guide to mute, unfollow, restrict and block explains how these options differ.
They hid their story from you
Anyone can keep their stories and live videos away from chosen people with a "hide story from" list in their settings. People on that list get no notification. For them the account simply never has a story: no ring on the photo, nothing in the tray. Posts, reels, likes, comments and messages all keep working.
That's why it's hard to confirm. From your own account, a hidden story looks exactly like no story. The real test is from outside: if a friend sees a story on that profile at the same moment you don't, and you haven't muted them, you're almost certainly on the list. For a public account you can also use the check near the end of this article.
It was a Close Friends story
Close Friends is a list the owner builds by hand. A story shared to it shows only to people on the list, with a green ring. If you're not on it, the story doesn't exist for you: no ring, no placeholder, nothing to tap.
People often mix regular and Close Friends stories, so you may see some of someone's stories and miss others. No app, website or viewer can show a Close Friends story to someone outside the list, because it's never public. More on the feature is in the Close Friends guide.
Their account is private, or you were removed as a follower
On a private account, only approved followers see stories. If your request is still pending or you never sent one, tapping the profile photo won't open anything.
If you used to follow a private account and now see "This account is private" with a Follow button, they most likely removed you as a follower. Instagram doesn't tell you when that happens. On a public account, removal doesn't hide stories. The account just stops appearing in your tray.
The only legitimate way into a private account's stories is an accepted follow request; the article on whether private stories can be viewed covers the details. If you're waiting for an account to go public, StoriesFly has a free "Tell me when it goes public" alert. It re-checks the account about once a week for up to six months and sends you a Telegram message if it opens up.
You're blocked
A block hides the whole account, not just the story. Typical signs:
- The account doesn't appear in search, even by exact username.
- An old link or tag shows "User not found", or a profile with no posts.
- You can't tag them, and your chat with them no longer accepts new messages.
With a hidden story, only the story is missing and everything else works. With a block, the whole account is gone for you. A deactivated or deleted account looks much the same, so ask a friend to check: if they see a normal profile and you don't, it's a block.
The story expired or was deleted
Stories leave the tray and the profile ring 24 hours after posting, and the owner can delete one sooner. If the ring was there earlier and now it isn't, this is the most ordinary explanation. More on the timing is in how long Instagram stories last.
An expired story can live on in a Highlight, one of the circles under the owner's bio. Otherwise it's only in the owner's private archive. For public accounts you can browse Highlights without an Instagram account in the highlights viewer.
If you keep missing a public account's stories, the StoriesFly tracker can message you in Telegram when a tracked account posts a new one. It's a paid feature, from $4.99/month, and it checks on a schedule rather than instantly, so the alert doesn't arrive the moment the story goes up.
You don't follow them, or the app is acting up
Your story tray only shows accounts you follow. For anyone else, open their profile and tap the photo. A grey ring means you've already watched everything they posted.
If nothing above fits, try these in order:
- Pull down on the home feed to refresh, and check your connection.
- Update Instagram from the App Store or Google Play.
- On Android, clear the app's cache under Settings, Apps, Instagram, Storage.
- Log out and back in.
- Reinstall the app.
If stories from many accounts fail at once, the problem is probably Instagram's or your network's, not one person's settings.
How to check whether a public story exists at all
When you can't tell whether the cause is on your side or theirs, look at the account from outside your own Instagram. An anonymous viewer shows the stories a public account has published for everyone.
With StoriesFly you can use the anonymous story viewer in a browser, or send the username or profile link to @instanavy_bot in Telegram. The bot replies with a button that opens that profile's stories inside Telegram. You never sign in with Instagram, so you don't appear in the owner's viewer list. The free plan includes 10 story views a day and needs no payment details.
How to read the result:
- The viewer shows a story you can't see in the app. The story is public and live, so the cause is on your side: muted, hidden from you, blocked, or an app problem.
- The viewer shows no story. Nothing public is up: it expired, was deleted, was never posted, or went to Close Friends only. If you get an error instead of an empty result, try again later.
- The account is private. The viewer can't show it, and neither can any other tool.
This works only for public accounts and never shows Close Friends stories. If it points to a hide or a block, that was a deliberate choice on their side. The viewer can confirm that a story exists; it can't tell you why they made that choice.
FAQ
How do I know if someone hid their story from me?
Instagram doesn't tell you, and from your account a hidden story looks the same as no story. The usual sign is that a friend sees a story on that profile while you see no ring, even though their posts and messages work normally for you.
Can I see a Close Friends story if I'm not on the list?
No. Close Friends stories are shown only to people the owner added, and no app, website or viewer can open them for anyone else.
Why does it say someone posted but I can't see it?
Most likely the story was deleted or had expired by the time you looked. If a friend told you about it, it may also have been a Close Friends story or one hidden from you.
If I'm blocked, can I still see their story?
Not from the account they blocked. A public account's stories stay public to everyone else, but the block itself tells you they don't want contact.
Why did the Instagram story ring disappear?
The story expired or was deleted, or you've watched it and the ring turned grey. If a friend still sees a ring and you don't, you've probably been hidden from their story. For a public account you can check through @instanavy_bot.
