02What the number is

What the share of empty accounts means

The report reads the newest followers of the account, up to about 600 of them, and counts how many have no videos and no followers. That share is printed with the size of the sample, so you can see what it rests on.

A big share of empty accounts often comes from bought or automated followers, but not always: brand new real accounts look the same, and so do people who only watch. That is why it is a signal and not a verdict.

On a very large account, TikTok gives only the most recent hours of followers, so the sample is that fresh slice, not the whole audience. The report states the size of the sample for this reason.
