Why a poolInstagram limits requests per session, not per visitor. Rotating between several sessions is what keeps downloads working at peak hours, when a lot of people are asking at once.
From a pasted link to a saved file
Everything that happens between pressing the button and the file landing in your downloads folder.
- 01The link is read, not openedThe field takes two things out of what you paste: the kind of media and the post id. Tracking parameters from the share sheet are dropped before the request is built.

Re-encoding is where quality is lost: every extra compression pass makes a story softer and takes bitrate off a reel's audio. There is no such pass here. You get the file Instagram saved when the creator uploaded it, with nothing added to it.

Your account is not in the request
Instagram records a view against whichever session asked for the story. In the app that session is you. Here it is one of ours, taken from the pool and rotated so that no single session carries the whole day.
You never sign in, so the request has no handle of yours to carry.
If you can still see the story, it can still be downloaded
Instagram deletes a story 24 hours after it is posted. Once that happens the file is off the public endpoints, and no downloader, this one included, can bring it back.
So the rule is short. If the ring is still on the profile, the story will download. If it has faded, you are too late. Highlights are the exception, because the person who posted them chose to keep them up.
Posts, reels and profile pictures have no such clock. They stay downloadable until the account deletes them or switches to private.
A full link, or just the handle
A bare handle returns the profile's current stories and its full-size picture, which is what most people come here for. A link returns the single post it points at.

Where a download stops
Four hard stops. None of them has a paid tier that removes it, because none of them is ours to remove.
- 01Private profilesMedia on a private account is not served on the public endpoints at all. There is no request to make, with our session or with anyone else's.
- 02Expired storiesAfter 24 hours Instagram has deleted the story. What is left is whatever the poster moved into a highlight before the time ran out.
- 03Downloading a whole account in a loopOne link, one file. Bulk scraping of an entire profile is a different product, and not one we run.
- 04Editing what the creator madeCaptions, stickers and music credits that are burned into the frame stay there. We add nothing of our own to the picture, and we cannot take out what the creator put in it.
Asked most often about downloads
Will the person know I downloaded their story?
No. The request carries one of our sessions rather than yours, so your handle never reaches their viewer list. There is nothing about you in the request to be recorded.
Do I need to log in with my Instagram account?
No, and there is no field for it anywhere on the page. If a site asks for your Instagram password to save a public story, close the tab.
Is the quality reduced?
No. You get the file as it was uploaded. Instagram's own compression already happened at upload time, and we do not add a second pass on top of it.
Can I download from a private account?
No. Private media is not served publicly, so there is nothing to request. If you are already an approved follower, the Instagram app is the only place that media exists.
Why did my download come back empty?
Usually one of three things: the story passed its 24 hours, the profile is private, or the link points at a post that has since been deleted.
Does it cost anything?
No, downloading is free. The paid plans exist for the tracker, which watches a profile over weeks and has a running cost behind it.
Where do the files go?
Into your device's normal downloads folder, through your browser. Nothing is stored in an account here, and we keep no copy after the request finishes.
Can I use what I download?
That depends on copyright rather than on the tool. The creator still owns what they posted: saving it for yourself is one thing, republishing it is another.
