Letters, digits, dots and underscores
The checker enforces the shape Instagram stores: four kinds of character, thirty at most. Anything else is refused in the page, before a request exists.

Instagram allows one owner per handle
Instagram allows one owner per handle across the whole platform. That is why this checker keeps no database of its own: the live lookup is the registry, and anything cached would already be out of date.
Taken is a statement about this minute. Handles free up when accounts rename or get deleted, and get claimed the same way. Nothing in the answer reserves a name for you, and nothing tells the current holder that you asked.
Available is narrower than it sounds: it means no public profile answered. At signup Instagram can still refuse a name it holds back internally, and from outside a held name and a free one look identical. That limit applies to every username checker, this one included.
Why the check asks Instagram directly
The only registry of Instagram handles is Instagram, so the check asks it on every press.

What a username check cannot see
The verdict is live, and that is also where it stops.

- 02Held names read as freeInstagram keeps some names unregisterable, such as protected words and remnants of banned accounts. No public profile answers for those either, so the checker cannot tell them from genuinely free names.

How many checks do I get?
Ten username checks a day signed out, thirty with a free account, and no limit on Pro. One check is one profile lookup, the cheapest call on this site, which is why this quota is the loosest one here.
Does checking a name tip anyone off?
No. The lookup reads a public surface, the holder of a taken handle is not notified, and the name you typed is not kept anywhere for later browsing.
The checker said available, but signup refused it. Why?
Some Instagram handles are held back internally, such as reserved words or names left behind by banned accounts. They have no public profile, so from outside they look exactly like free names, and the refusal comes from a list only Instagram can see.
Do capital letters matter?
No, Instagram handles are case-insensitive: marta and Marta resolve to the same account. The field folds what you type to lowercase before the lookup, the way the platform stores it.
Can a taken handle become free later?
Yes. A rename releases the old name, and deleted accounts eventually release theirs. There is no schedule and no waiting list, so checking again is the only way to find out.
What about private accounts?
A private account still answers to its name, so its handle reads as taken. Privacy hides the content, not the handle.
What makes a name invalid?
Anything outside letters, digits, dots and underscores, with spaces the most common case, or a name longer than thirty characters. The page refuses those itself, before any lookup runs.
Why do the suggested spellings run a fresh check?
