Instagram stories last exactly 24 hours from the time they are posted. After that, they automatically disappear from your profile and followers' feeds.
Story Timeline
- 0 hours: Story is posted and visible to followers
- 24 hours: Story expires and disappears
- After expiry: Story moves to your personal archive (only visible to you)
- Highlights: If added to highlights, stories persist indefinitely

- It disappears from your profile's story ring
- Followers can no longer see it
- It moves to your personal Story Archive (if enabled)
- You can still add it to highlights later
Instagram Story Archive (Built-in)
Instagram has a built-in archive feature that saves your own stories:
- Go to your profile
- Tap the menu icon
- Select "Archive"
- Choose "Stories Archive"
- All your expired stories are saved here
Note: This is your own archive — you can't see other people's archived stories through Instagram.
