## How do you analyze TikTok competitors with AI?

Connect ChatGPT or Claude to live TikTok data, name the competitor accounts, and ask for three things: their posting rhythm, their outlier videos (the ones that did far better than that account's own median), and what they repost. The assistant reads their public profiles and videos and returns a comparison with numbers. Without a connector, neither assistant can open TikTok, so it can only work from what you paste.

*Updated October 2026.*

This guide uses StoriesFly as the connector. It shows a workflow for three to five competitors, the prompts, what each step costs in requests, and what public TikTok data cannot tell you.

## Why outliers matter more than view counts

On TikTok a raw view count says little. A video with 200,000 views is a big hit for a creator whose videos usually get 15,000, and a weak one for a creator whose median is 900,000. Comparing competitors by total views mostly tells you who is bigger.

The useful question is: **which videos did unusually well for that account?** Those outliers show what the audience of your niche responds to right now, separated from the account's size. When several competitors have outliers with the same format, hook or topic, that is a pattern worth testing.

An AI assistant is good at this. It can take 60 videos per account, compute medians, flag everything above three times the median and describe what those videos share, faster than you can open them.

## Setup

Add StoriesFly once; steps are on the [connect page](/developers/mcp#connect).

- **ChatGPT** (Free plan included): Plugins → Add → Add custom MCP server → `https://storiesfly.com/mcp` → OAuth → Connect → sign in with Telegram.
- **Claude:** Customize → Connectors → Add custom connector → same address → Connect → sign in with Telegram.

The first 100 requests are free, once per Telegram account. You never log in to TikTok with your own account, and your account never appears among a story's viewers. What the TikTok tools return is listed on the [TikTok MCP page](/developers/tiktok-mcp).

## Step 1: Read the accounts

```
My TikTok is @ourkitchen. Competitors: @zest.kitchen, @panfried.daily,
@tinyoven. For each account, read the profile and the latest videos,
2 pages each. Don't analyze yet.
```

**Cost:** 1 profile + 2 pages of videos = 3 requests × 4 accounts = **12 requests**.

## Step 2: Rhythm and baseline

```
For each account: followers, total likes, videos per week over what you read,
longest gap between videos, median views, median likes per 1,000 views,
median comments per 1,000 views. Put it in a table.
```

**Cost:** 0, the data is already in the chat.

Sample result:

| | @ourkitchen | @zest.kitchen | @panfried.daily | @tinyoven |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Followers | 18K | 312K | 96K | 41K |
| Videos per week | 2.0 | 5.2 | 7.4 | 3.1 |
| Median views | 6.1K | 41K | 22K | 19K |
| Likes per 1K views | 58 | 71 | 44 | 83 |

"@tinyoven gets fewer views than @panfried.daily but much stronger likes per view, with half the posting. @panfried.daily posts daily and its median is held up by volume."

## Step 3: Find the outliers

```
For each competitor, list every video with more than 3× that account's
median views: caption, length, date, views. Then tell me what the outliers
across all three accounts have in common, and what none of my videos do.
```

**Cost:** 0, unless you want a longer history. If so:

```
Read 2 more pages of videos for @zest.kitchen and redo the outliers for her.
```

That is 2 more requests.

Typical findings: outliers are shorter than the account's average; they open on the result, not the process; captions are a plain promise ("3-ingredient lunch") rather than a joke. The assistant can only see what is in the numbers and captions. It does not watch the videos, so ask it to give you the links and check the top ones yourself.

## Step 4: One outlier in detail

```
Read the full details of the top outlier of @tinyoven: views, likes,
comments, shares, length, caption, hashtags and its soundtrack.
```

**Cost:** 1 request.

Shares are worth a look: a video with a high share rate travels through messages, and that usually means it is useful or funny enough to send to someone.

## Step 5: What they repost

TikTok reposts show what a creator likes from others. Competitors' reposts are a free list of accounts and formats your audience already engages with.

```
Read the latest reposts of @zest.kitchen and @tinyoven.
Which creators do they repost most? Any formats that keep coming up?
```

**Cost:** 1 request per account per page = **2 requests**.

An account with no reposts, or one that hides them, comes back as an empty list.

## Step 6: Who they follow

```
Read the first page of accounts @tinyoven follows. Which look like other
food creators, brands or collaborators?
```

**Cost:** 1 request per page. Many TikTok accounts hide who they follow; a hidden list comes back empty and marked as hidden. More on this in [TikTok following lists with AI](/blog/tiktok-followers-following-with-ai).

## Total cost

| Step | Requests |
|---|---|
| Profiles and 2 pages of videos, 4 accounts | 12 |
| Tables and outliers | 0 |
| Longer history for one competitor | 2 |
| One outlier in detail | 1 |
| Reposts of 2 accounts | 2 |
| One following page | 1 |
| **Total** | **about 18** |

The free 100 covers this five times. For a weekly check of a niche, Basic (100 a month, $4.99) or Pro (500 a month, $19.99) fits. For daily monitoring of many accounts, a prepaid balance has no monthly cap: $1.50 per 1,000 requests at the entry price, from $10, and it never expires. See [plans](/developers/mcp).

## Watching a niche over time

TikTok formats wear out within weeks. A one-off analysis is a snapshot; the real value is in repeating it.

A simple routine: every Monday, run steps 1–3 for your five closest competitors and ask the assistant to list new outliers since last week. Paste last week's list so it can compare. That is about 15 requests a week, around 60 a month.

If you want this built into your own dashboard or script, the same data is in the [TikTok API](/developers/tiktok-api).

## What the analysis cannot show

- **Watch time, completion rate, traffic sources.** TikTok shows these only to the account owner.
- **Audience age, gender and country.** Owner-only.
- **For You page distribution and paid promotion.** Not public.
- **Sound and hashtag trend charts across TikTok.** StoriesFly reads accounts and their videos; it does not track which sounds or hashtags are rising platform-wide. The outlier method above is how you see what works in your niche without a trend chart.
- **Private accounts.** The assistant reports the account as private (one request) and stops.
- **Why something worked.** The assistant sees numbers and captions, not the video itself. Treat its patterns as ideas to test.

## Using the same flow for Instagram

Most creators in a niche are on both platforms. The same connection reads Instagram, so you can ask:

```
@zest.kitchen is also on Instagram under the same name. Are her TikTok
outliers also her best reels on Instagram?
```

For the Instagram side on its own, see [Instagram competitor analysis with Claude or ChatGPT](/blog/instagram-competitor-analysis-with-claude-chatgpt).

## FAQ

### Can ChatGPT analyze TikTok competitors on its own?

No. ChatGPT can't open TikTok accounts by itself and its training data is old. Connect it to live data with an MCP server such as StoriesFly, then it reads competitors' profiles and videos directly.

### What is an outlier video on TikTok?

A video that did much better than the account's own usual result, for example more than three times its median views. Outliers show what worked for that audience, independent of account size.

### How many requests does a TikTok competitor analysis use?

About 18 for your account plus three competitors with reposts and a following page. A quick look at one account's profile and latest videos is 2 requests.

### Can it tell me which sounds are trending in my niche?

StoriesFly does not track sound or hashtag trends across TikTok. For a single video it returns the details TikTok gives, including the soundtrack, so you can check what your competitors' outliers use.

### Can I see a competitor's TikTok analytics?

No. Watch time, traffic sources and audience demographics are visible only to the account owner. You see the public numbers: views, likes, comments, shares, followers, and the dates of videos.

### Do I need a TikTok account for this?

No. You sign in to StoriesFly with Telegram. You never log in to TikTok with your own account.
