## Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story?

No. Instagram does not tell anyone when you screenshot or screen record their story, and the same goes for Close Friends stories, highlights, posts and reels. The only places where Instagram reacts to a capture are disappearing photos and videos sent in DMs and chats in vanish mode. What the owner can see is that you watched the story, because opening it while logged in puts your name in their viewers list.

In short, the screenshot leaves no trace, but opening the story from your account does. Below: where the exceptions are, how screen recordings compare, and how to keep a copy of a story without appearing among its viewers.

## What triggers an alert and what doesn't

| What you capture | Does Instagram tell anyone? |
|---|---|
| Story, including Close Friends | No |
| Highlight | No |
| Feed post, reel or carousel | No |
| Profile photo or bio | No |
| Regular message in a DM | No |
| "View once" or "Allow replay" photo or video in a DM | Yes. Current apps usually block the capture, and the sender has long been shown a notice when one goes through |
| Message in a vanish mode chat | Yes, the other person is notified |

## When Instagram does react: disappearing DMs and vanish mode

Both exceptions are in private messages, where the sender has chosen for something to disappear.

- **View once and Allow replay.** When you send a photo or video from the DM camera, you choose whether it can be viewed once, replayed, or kept in the chat. For the first two, Instagram has long shown the sender a notice in the chat when the recipient takes a screenshot. In late 2024 Meta went further and started blocking screenshots and screen recordings of this media, so on a current app you will usually get a blank image instead.
- **Vanish mode.** In a vanish mode chat, messages disappear after they have been seen and the chat is closed. Instagram's help pages say the other person is notified if a screenshot is detected.

Everything outside these two cases can be captured without any notice, including ordinary messages in the same conversation.

## Screenshots vs screen recordings

Instagram treats them the same way. Recording someone's story, reel or feed post sends no alert, just like a screenshot. Recording view-once or replayable media in a DM is handled like a screenshot of it, since Meta's late-2024 change covers both.

The practical difference is quality. A screenshot or a recording is a copy of your screen, not of the story. It is limited to your screen's resolution and picks up whatever the app draws on top: the progress bar, the username, the reply field. A recording also starts and stops wherever your finger does, so it usually needs trimming afterwards.

## The part that does show up: your view

When you open a story while logged in to Instagram, your account is added to that story's viewers list. The owner can check the list while the story is live and for a while afterwards in their archive. [How long the viewers list stays visible](/blog/can-you-see-who-viewed-your-instagram-story) is covered in a separate article.

This is the detail most people miss. A screenshot adds nothing to the list, but you had to watch the story to take it, and watching it is what puts you there. On a Close Friends story, where the viewers list is short, your name is easy to spot.

## How to save a story without showing up as a viewer

If you want a copy of a public account's story and would rather not appear among its viewers, the way to do it is to open the story without your own Instagram account.

On the web, the [StoriesFly story viewer](/instagram-story-viewer) shows a public account's current stories after you type the username. You don't log in to Instagram, and StoriesFly never asks for your Instagram login or password, so your account can't show up in the viewers list. StoriesFly also doesn't mark stories as seen. The download button on a story saves the photo or video file itself rather than a picture of your screen, and the [Instagram downloader](/instagram-downloader) does the same for posts and reels when you paste their link.

In Telegram, StoriesFly's bot [@instanavy_bot](https://t.me/instanavy_bot?start=web_blog) does the same job without leaving the messenger:

1. Open the bot and press Start.
2. Send it an Instagram @username or an instagram.com profile link.
3. Tap the button in the reply to open that profile's stories inside Telegram.
4. Tap Send on a story. The photo or video arrives in your chat with the bot, where you can keep it or forward it. "Send to Telegram" sends all of the profile's current stories at once.

You are signed in with your Telegram account automatically, so there is no form, email or password. Two things to know: Telegram compresses images it receives as photos, and videos over 50 MB are not sent to the chat.

A common reason to screenshot a story is to show it to a friend. In any Telegram chat you can type @instanavy_bot followed by a username to share a link to that profile's stories. If nothing appears after you type, open the bot and send the username there instead.

Here is how the options compare:

| Method | In the viewers list? | What you end up with | Private accounts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screenshot in the Instagram app | Yes | An image of your screen, with app overlays | Only if you follow them |
| Screen recording in the Instagram app | Yes | A video of your screen that needs trimming | Only if you follow them |
| StoriesFly website | No | The story's photo or video file | No |
| @instanavy_bot in Telegram | No | The photo or video, sent to your Telegram chat | No |

The limits, stated plainly:

- **Public accounts only.** Stories from private accounts can't be viewed or saved this way.
- **Daily allowance.** The free plan includes 10 story views, 50 downloads and 5 highlight views a day, with no payment details. Paid plans start from $4.99/month and remove the daily limits on story views and downloads.
- **No absolute promises.** Stories are fetched through StoriesFly's servers and outside data providers, so no honest service can promise that nobody could ever find out. What it can say is that your own Instagram account is never involved.

## Did Instagram ever notify for story screenshots?

Briefly, yes. In February 2018 Instagram tested story screenshot alerts with some users: the poster saw a small icon next to the name of anyone who had captured their story. The test ended in June 2018, and story screenshots have been silent since.

Posts claiming the alert is back go around from time to time. Instagram has not announced any such feature, and as of September 2026 the only capture alerts it documents are the DM ones above.

## If you post stories: what you can control

Because screenshots are silent, you can't find out who saved your story. What you can control is who sees it in the first place:

- Share personal stories to Close Friends instead of all followers.
- Use "Hide story from" for specific people.
- Make the account private, so only approved followers can see your stories and anonymous viewers can't see them at all.
- Turn off sharing your story as a message in the story settings.

Anything posted to a public account for 24 hours can be seen and saved by anyone, with or without an Instagram account. There is also a guide to [story features that are easy to overlook](/blog/instagram-story-hacks-hidden-features) if you post often.

## FAQ

### Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a post or reel?

No. Feed posts, reels, carousels and profile photos can be captured without any alert. Only disappearing photos and videos in DMs and vanish mode chats are treated differently.

### Does Instagram notify when you screen record a story?

No. Screen recordings follow the same rules as screenshots: silent for stories, blocked or flagged for view-once and replayable media in DMs.

### Can someone see if you screenshot their Close Friends story?

No. A Close Friends story works like any other story here: the poster sees you in the viewers list, but not whether you took a screenshot. Close Friends lists are often small, though, so your view is easier to notice.

### Does Instagram notify when you download a story?

Instagram has no download button for other people's stories, so there is nothing for it to report. Tools that don't use your Instagram account, such as StoriesFly or [@instanavy_bot](https://t.me/instanavy_bot?start=web_blog) in Telegram, leave neither a download alert nor your name in the viewers list.

### Can I see who screenshotted my Instagram story?

No. Instagram doesn't record story screenshots, so neither the app nor any outside tool can show you who took one.
